Job Description:

Summary of Duties: The Senior System Administrator (SSA) is responsible for IT system administration and network administration for Evergreen Fire & Security, its affiliated businesses, and other partners (Evergreen) as directed.  The SSA must be a self-starter who is highly motivated and dedicated to ensuring the systems and network infrastructure of the company operates optimally, that all data within it our properly protected and should require minimal supervision.  The SSA will be responsible for ensuring Evergreen is in compliance with industry and government standards/ requirements which includes the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) SP 800-171 Rev 1.  The position is based in Tacoma, Washington and is supervised by our Chief Operations Officer or designee.   

The expected duties of this position may include troubleshooting and resolving complex IT issues and service requests that our third-party service help desk is not able to resolve.  This includes but is not limited to general systems and network administration along with troubleshooting end user requests and any hardware/software issues.  General systems administration tasks include timely updates of software ensuring the company’s software is in compliance with all licensing and usage requirements, and new computer software updates, loading, and workstation setup.

This individual is accountable for all company systems including Linux and Windows systems that support Evergreen’s infrastructure and application systems that support asset management. Responsibilities on these systems include: SA engineering and provisioning, operations support, maintenance, research, and development to ensure continual innovation.

The SSA is responsible for creating, gaining approval for, and working within a budget.  The SSA will work with vendors to identify cost competitive options to optimize on price, service, and support as needed to create, present and gain approval for proposed solutions that are within budget.  

The SSA will draft policy and procedures related to IT security and usage of IT equipment and related IT equipment.  The SSA will ensure proper training and stealth and non-stealth testing is conducted as well as required monitoring of staff adherence to, compliance with said policies.  The SSA will monitor usage and maintain our systems and software to ensure any abnormalities are identified in a timely manner, investigated and addressed.   

This individual will also assist other departments with technical issues in their effort to support of external customers in the initiation, planning, and implementation phases of project management. These activities include participating in the development of definition of needs, benefits, and creating the technical strategy; research and development within the project life-cycle; technical analysis and design; and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling-out the solutions.

The SSA must be able to handle stressful situations, enjoy working in a fast paced, high pressure environment that often has time sensitive deadlines.  They also must collaborate with non-technical staff and be able to handle objections and resolve disputes to satisfactory outcomes.

Evergreen must have the highest degree of trust in the person filling this positions as they will have access to extensive proprietary, personal identifiable, controlled unclassified, and sensitive information and communication across the organization as well as with external parties.  In line with this, the position requires an individual who not only has the highest level of integrity, but must act and take steps to ensure they are always (and are always viewed as one) who maintains the utmost confidentiality of employee, company, customer, vendor, and other above noted information at all times. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities – Systems Administration:

 

  • Subject Matter Expert

    • Research and recommend automated approaches for system administration tasks;

    • Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale;

    • Create policies, procedures, and system standards;

       

  • Monitoring & Verification

    • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions

    • Responds to and immediately addresses security;

    • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs

    • Verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups

    • Responds immediately usability concerns;

    • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up per policy;

       

  • Administration, Response & Communication

    • Administrate infrastructure, including but not limited to: firewalls, databases, malware protection software and other processes.

    • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request;

    • Respond to and resolve help desk requests not handled by our third-party support provider;

    • Provide Tier II+/other support per request from various constituencies. 

    • Investigate and troubleshoot issues;

    • Timely repair and recovery from hardware or software failures. 

    • Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies;

    • Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required;

    • Configure / add new services as necessary;

    • Upgrade systems and processes as required for enhanced functionality and security issue resolution;

    • Install and test computer-related equipment;

    • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements;

    • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities;

    • Administer servers, desktop computers, printers, routers, switches, firewalls, phones, personal digital assistants, smartphones, software deployment, security updates and patches;

       

  • Ensures high availability and acceptable levels of performance of mission critical host computer resources;

    • Provides technical support for both hardware and software issues encountered by staff and partners;

    • Timely repair and recovery from hardware or software failures. 

    • Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies;

    • Sometimes required to work evenings and weekends with little advanced notice;
    • Primary on-call resource who must respond to emergencies or troubles during off hours;
    • Respond reliably to on-call issues as needed;

    • Performs troubleshooting as required and leads problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors and other support personnel and/or organizations;

    • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning;

    • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. 

    • Be an excellent problem solver and willing to roll up your sleeves to tackle any issue thrown your way;

       

  • Manages and maintains:

    • Microsoft Exchange 2007/2010 environment and all related messaging components;

    • Production VMware environment;

    • Storage Area Network and related sub systems;

    • Data center environmental and monitoring equipment;

    • Computer host systems including hardware, software, and equipment such as air-conditioning system, UPS (uninterrupted power system), security system, CCTV, badging, gate access, and fire protection system;

    • Configuration and operation of client-based computer operating systems;

    • Imaging deployment for workstations, and servers;

    • May assist our System Analyst with Vista and SharePoint;

Job Duties and Responsibilities – Network Administration:

 

  • Assesses all project information to understand the scope, the current IT and business environment, objectives and priorities.
  • Defines and documents the proposed high-level solutions
  • Analyzes technical risks and advises on risk mitigation strategies.
  • IT Network Equipment Resource Management
    • Identifies resource needs based on the proposed solution.
    • Develop a high-level project schedule, implementation plan for the project, and project costs.
    • Responsible for the technical content (architecture and design), integrity and quality of solution
    • Accountable for the delivery of the solution as specified (by requirements and architecture)
    • Prepares for the implementation of the solution
    • Analyzes available assets (frameworks, reference architectures, etc) to bridge the gap between the as-is architecture and the to-be architecture.
    • Evaluates non-functional requirements for testability and technical acceptance criteria.

 

  • Network Design, Reviews, & Solutions
    • Establishes high-level models that guide solution architecture design, sub-architecture, or deployment and reviews with all interested parties.
    • Ensures solution will integrate with existing technologies
    • Ensures solutions are supportable in a Global level
    • Participates in reviews of the designs, prototypes and other technical deliverables to ensure they fulfill requirements and meet standards.
    • Refines architectural decisions, at a project level, related to the infrastructure & network, etc.
    • Ensures the end-to-end service architectural road-map to address the standard service and customization options.
    • Defines and implements plans to address the service's integration points with other services.
    • Contributes to and helps to develop the roadmap for the global network design and services.

 

  • Network Administration
    • Support LANs, WANs, network segments, Internet, and intranet systems;
    • Ensure network connectivity throughout a company's LAN/WAN infrastructure is on par with technical considerations;
    • Design and deploy networks;
    • Assign routing protocols and routing table configuration;
    • Perform network address assignment;
  • Maintain integrity of the network, server deployment, and security;
  • Addresses compliance requirements such as Payment Card Industry (PCI), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Personally Identifiable Information (PII), and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
  • Adherence to IT standards.
     

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position may have one or more direct and/or indirect supervisory responsibilities. It is the Supervisor’s duty to mentor, train, develop, and set direction and support. The Supervisor will act as a communicator and will be a resource to improve processes and quality. It will also be the Supervisor’s job to introduce, demonstrate, and review the Leadership Principles with their team.

  • Functions as a lead worker, doing the work similar to those in the work unit; responsibility for training, instruction, setting the work pace, and possibly evaluating performance;

 

 

Experience and Skills:

Required Experience and Qualifications:

 

  • Must have a BS/BA in a field of study relevant to the work being performed
  • 5+ years of technical IT infrastructure experience
  • Data center operations
  • Dell or Cisco UCS rack mount and blade server hardware
  • Mid-tier storage systems (Dell, EMC, Tegile)
  • PowerShell scripting
  • Microsoft Exchange 2007/2010 environment and all related messaging components;
  • Understanding of active directory, domain administration, and SharePoint
  • Experience deploying point-to-point VPNs, VLANS, Firewalls
  • Ability to follow security designs that comply with Defense Federal Acquisition Regulations and FARs
  • Ability to receive a Top-Secret Clearance
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and consult (providing customer options with pros, cons, and risks) around all key technical decisions during project delivery
  • Strong interpersonal skills, customer centric attitude, and ability to deal with cultural diversity

  • VMWare Certified Professional (VCP)

  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Top Secret Clearance;
  • Cisco and Dell data center switching desirable

Travel:

  • This position requires up to 10% travel.

  • Occasionally needs to visit remote office and customer sites;

Other Requirements:

Must have a valid enhanced state driver’s license and proof of minimum liability auto insurance.  Must be able to successfully pass a background screening to include background, drug and MVR screening and continue to participate in the company’s random screening program.
